The Sustainable Sites Initiative™ (SITES®)

The Sustainable Sites Initiative™ (SITES®) v2 Rating System is a set of comprehensive, voluntary guidelines together with a rating system that assesses the sustainable design, construction, and maintenance of landscapes. It is used by landscape architects, designers, engineers, architects, developers, policy-makers, and others to guide land design and development. The SITES v2 Rating System can apply to projects a various scales, with or without buildings. Project types include: open spaces, streetscapes, commercial and educational / institutional campuses, residential neighborhoods and yards, military, and more. At the 2016 ASLA Annual Meeting and EXPO, attendees will have the opportunity to enrich their knowledge and experience with this program through the following:

SITES Workshop entitled “Navigating the Submittal Process and Trouble-shooting Challenges with the Experts.” Workshop experts/presenters include: Jose Alminana, FASLA, and Jason Curtis, Andropogon Associates, David Yocca, FASLA, Conservation Design Forum, Micah Silvey, PE, LEED AP BD +C, Green Business Certification Inc. and James Moyer, Grand Valley State University. There will be an overview of the SITES certification process and then a focus on particular topics for each of the project breakouts.

Increased municipal requirements and decreased maintenance budgets are challenges that affect public and private projects. This session examines how early integration of sustainable design decisions for hydrology, soil, and vegetation with operations and maintenance plans can improve performance outcomes, cost effectiveness, educational opportunities, and marketability while satisfying SITES credits.

The Sustainable SITES Initiative™ (SITES®) Accredited Professional (AP) Exam

The Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) administers SITES, the most comprehensive program for designing sustainable landscapes. The SITES AP exam will be an important tool for all professionals practicing sustainable landscape design who are looking to grow their careers and impact the direction of land development and management. The SITES AP establishes a common framework to define the profession of sustainable land design and construction, and also provides landscape professionals with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, expertise and commitment to the profession.
